Some kind couple from
Long Island gave me a backstage pass while I was ushering the pit for the July 1, 1995 Spac Jazz Fest.

I got to meet Little Richard at the end of the night surrounded by about 7 huge bodyguards. Great gentle guy. Thank you to that couple from Long Island.

Not the Saratoga Jazzfest so apologies. I have idyllic memories of The Newport Jazz Fest held in Saratoga Springs in June 1980 .Well worth driving up from my cruise ship gig in Miami for.A great great festival…Hubert Laws, Phil Woods, Sarah Vaughan and Spyro Gyra closed .Does anyone have any info ,as I’ve hunted high and low but nary a mention anywhere.

I was there. Sponsered by “KOOL” cigarettes. Zoot Simms and Al Cohen, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie w Ray Mantilla, Chick Corea, Spyro Gyra, Hubert Laws, and I also have a signed poster. Two days, great time. I has a press pass and shot the whole event on Kodak Tri x pan. Also bought a signed Mingus double Album there.

Here’s a review of the Saratoga lineup in 1980, which I thought for some reason was the 25th Anniversary. The lineup certainly was worthy of such an event. In addition to those mentioned in the article, I recall the Brecker Brothers, Billy Cobham (I think), Spyro Gyra, and Jean-Luc Ponty, along with all the others, in one last set. @Chuck
Thanks Chuck…Bella was wonderful as I recall, just as he was starting to come into his own. Again, is there anyway to acquire a list of performers from those early ’90s shos. I attended from 91-94 and would like a refresher on acts that were there. I know Ray Charles, Dr. John, Marcia Ball I believe…Little Richard, Tower of Power but sure to be missing some. The list would be great if it’s on a spread sheet somewhere..been looking to no avail..

@Neil McManus
Tony played on Saturday, June 26th 1993 in the amphitheater of course at 8:15 P.M. right after Spyro Gyra and before Buddy Guy. Bela Fleck closed after Buddy that night. Tony did not play in 91, 92 or 94. That 93 festival was also notable for a performance by Pinetop Perkins at the Gazebo on Saturday. Saturday also had Grover Washington Jr. Sunday included Charles Lloyd, Gilberto Gil with Gal Costa. The closing three acts were Ramsey Lewis, Michael Franks and Aretha Franklin.

I’m just trying to acquire some past lineup information as the current link on this page is not working. Friends recently went to see Tony Bennett here in Buffalo, NY which led to a conversation regarding past concerts. I remember seeing Tony at the SPAC Jazz fest in the early ’90s along with other legendary talents. I would love to acquire a run down of the years in which I attended the festival (1991-1994) Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have been to about 25 of the jazz festivals at Saratoga since 1978. I was also at the original in 1978 which was the best overall weekend. The reason was the real greats were there for both days and the big bands were there Sunday. Count Basie Orchestra etc. There is a list of the of the bands and there is one missing. On Sunday the great Harry James Orchestra was there. There is a YouTube audio of Harry and the band that day. Should be added to the list.

moin moin Herr Prof. Hausen,

@Dr. Bjoern M. Hausen

I am using this channel to respond to your piece in IAJRC concerning Slam Stewart since there was no mention of your email address in the article.
As you know, Slam lived in Binghamton, New York for the last 10-20 years of his life. He worked when he could by playing in festivals, gigs with Goodman and others. Every so often he would bring musicians into town for special concerts. He developed a good relationship with Al Hamme who was head of the Jazz Program at Binghamton University and made at least two recordings with him for “Sertoma” (a charitable organization). Often when artists were brought into the University, Slam would show up and play with them, I have a recording made in a master class with Marion McPartland when she made such a visit. My understanding is that Slam left some (?) of his musical memorabilia with Sherry Miracle who is a very successful drummer and band leader (Diva). Both she and Al might be useful in your bio-discography, if you were to contact them. Claire, Slam’s widow is still alive, I believe,but she moved out of town to my knowledge. Good luck with your research. Regards

You can contact me via email.

@Dr. Bjoern M. Hausen

The piece in the IAJRC Journal does not have your email address, so I’m posting this here.

In the William A Savory Collection there is one 16″ broken glass disc containing an undated broadcast performance by the Art Tatum Trio (Stewart on bass) of “Exactly Like You”. The announcer says the broadcast is from the Red Cross Auditorium and sponsored by the War Activities Committee. The station is WMAL, Washington D.C., part of the Blue Network.
The disc will be played (hopefully) at the Library of Congress, which has an optical reader which can play broken glass lacquer-coated discs.

Dear Sir,
on the Second Saratoga Jazz Festival on August 18th, 1972 a concert took place, with Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Slam Stewart, Teddy Wilson and an unknown drummer. I am working on a biography concerning the bass player SLAM STEWART. Do you have a video or audio tape of this concert or a CD for sale ? Or at least a tracklisting of this concert ?
It would be a pleasure to hear from you.
Kind regards
Bjoern Hausen, Agathenburg, Germany (4/1st/2012)
